Interview: Arthur Miller

Me: Hello Mr Miller. I would like to ask you some questions about you're book the Crucible. Do you have some time to discuss it?

Miller: Yes of course.

Me: Well what was the real reason for you writing the Crucible?

Miller: The reason for me writing the Crucible is to show one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history.

Me: And how has the public responded to this? Any critics?

Miller: The public has responded in a negative and positive way.

Me: Do you mind expanding on that?

Miller: On the positive side people are seeing how obscene these McCarthy trials are. And on the negative side I'm being accused of being a communist myself.

Me: I have read the book. Why is it that the book is so close to McCarthyism?

Miller: Like the girls making radical accusations, McCarthy himself is doing the same thing just covering it up in a different name and trying to hide it in a different method.

Me: It was a pleasure talking to you but i have ran out of time. Thank you again for your time.

Miller: It was a pleasure.

Skit

McCarthy: Mr Miller why would you go against my beliefs?
Miller: Because you have no proof, these people are innocent and you know it.
McCarthy: You're telling lies. I have proof that these peo-
Miller: What proof? They meet up with each other at a coffee spot? They talk to one another? Tell me what actual proof you have that they are communists?
McCarthy: Watch your tone with me. Remember you are the one being on trial.
Miller: I'm on trial because you hate me. Just like in the Salem trials you are making bogus accusations because you secretly hate people. You are using communism to your own advantage.
McCarthy: Oh really? What proof do you have of that?
Miller: What proof do you have on me on being a communist?
McCarthy: You wrote a book that went against these trials.
Miller: Because these trials don't make sense.
McCarthy: You do know that communism has spread widely in Europe and China. It was only a matter of time that this plague got to the United States.
Miller: Again you are talking about a subject that doesn't exist in the United States in the first place.
McCarthy: Men take him away i have no time to waste explaining this subject to a hard headed man like this one.
Miller: This will come back to haunt you.

Picture analysis

In the picture to the top you can see how every one is engaged in the
conversation of McCarthyism while one person is giving a public speech
about communism how he was involved and how their more people
involved in it also. In the picture located at the bottom you can see
the people doing a similar thing. Proplr scared of being accused
for something they haven't done.

Diary Entry

April 9Th 1950

Dear Diary

In hope that this hunt will end, I'm publishing my book to see if this can help in anyway. This communism subject has been around for to long. McCarthy is blowing this subject way out of proportions. Writers like myself and entertainers are finding it hard to find work now because of this. Just like people in the village of Salem were terrified of being accused of using witchcraft people now are scared of being accused for communism. I hope that me and some entertainers can stop this before this gets out of hand. But i fear that like other's, i will be accused of also being a communist because of this play write and going against McCarthy himself. Some witters have already been accused and blacklisted. Some of them have been incarcerated and have had there passports taken away. And because these trials are being publicized they are being left without work and destroying the chance to get any new opportunities. I can only hope and wait to see if America gets the message i am trying to send to them in this play write.

Poetry

In this time of suspense,
fingers are pointed towards men,
people turning against themselves,
people who once trusted each other,
in a time of darkness,
where one is being accused for something,
either it be communism or witchcraft,
life's are being affected,
taken away or arrested,
tears are being shed,
for the life of men,
and those making accusations,
either for greed or vengeance,
go on to live with pain,
becuase there actions haunt there name.

Introduction

http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/images/McCarthy.jpghttp://www.captainmarvelculture.com/images/SAL_CRUsm.jpg

The purpose of this blog is to show how the Crucible and McCarthyism are alike. How they influenced people living in that time period
Joseph McCarthy (top picture) was a Senator concerned with the large spread of communism going on in Easter Europe and China. McCarthy then accused over two hundred people in the United States of being communist's. McCarthyism is known as the hunt for the so believed communist's that were living in the United States. The Crucible (bottom picture) by Arthur Miller resembles McCarthyism. Like McCarthy making false accusations, in Salem, girls made radical accusation of witchcraft through the village.
